Rock Creek State Park

Rock Creek State Park Is One Of The Most Popular State Parks In Iowa For Fishing

Located close to the town of Kellogg in Jasper County, Iowa, Rock Creek S. P. is an extremely popular place for fishing and only one other of the Iowa State Parks receives more campers during the year.

Opened in 1952 Rock Creek State Park covers 1,697 acres of land around a 600 acre lake which is a man-made impound well stocked with largemouth bass, catfish, walleye, saugeye, bullhead and crappie.

Because the park is such a popular place for campers, the campground is quite large. It has 200 sites consisting of a mix of primitive camping sites, non-electric sites and 101 sites with electrical hookups.

The campground is located on the eastern shores of the lake and has good views of the water, however, there are limited shade trees to put your RV or tent under.

During holidays and on weekends the main campground can get crowded but if you don`t have to have electric hookups then the primitive camping area is relatively quiet and the extra space between each site gives you a bit more privacy.

The northern end of the campground is where you will find a modern bath house, dump station and the childrens playground, the southern end has a primitive restroom and several freshwater spigots.

The lake at Rock Creek has over 15 miles of shoreline and part of it has been reserved as a beach and designated swimming area, this has been roped off.

There is a pretty large car park here as well as a pleasant picnic shelter. There is another large picnic shelter sited on top of a slight hill on the western side of the lake.

A trail which is 10.5 miles long loops around the lake taking hikers, bikers and horseback riders through a variety of terrain. During the winter months this trail is used by cross-country skiers and snowmobilers

At the northern end of the lake is a large game management area run by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. It is open to the public for hunting. Thousands of migrating ducks use Rock Creek as a refuge on the journey to their summer breeding grounds.
